THE MEANING OF

MONEY WELL SPENT

I have always loved jewellery. I love wearing it, looking at it, raiding my mum’s collection of vintage jewels. Because jewellery can be so much more than a shiny accessory. If you know what to look for, the right piece will be sound investment. This column asses just that: What makes a jewel worth the price tag?

These Belle Époque diamond, platinum, and gold ear pendants, for example, are beautiful, but they carry a hefty cost. So how do you know they’re worth it?

Earrings like these are a long-term investment, and they are meant to be enjoyed. If worn semi-regularly, they become surprisingly economical, especially when you consider their potential investment value. Jewels from this era tend to appreciate due to scarcity and unwavering demand. And when value grows, the cost of owning them significantly shrinks.

Not only do these earrings hold high potential for investment, they are also incredibly versatile. While antique old-mine and old-European cut diamonds give historical charm and authenticity, the design is timeless. During the day, they add an elegant touch to a casual outfit. At night, they seamlessly transition to match any dinner, party, or formal event.

My advice? Keep these beauties for the long term. Let’s say you wear them twice a month for five years, then less frequently over the following decade. Your average cost per wear is less than 1% of the original price, and even if we assume they only accrued 30%, you’ve recovered the original cost and then some. Jewellery is made to be enjoyed, so wear these earrings, hold them in your collection, and if the time comes when you decide to part from them, you’ll know your purchase was worthwhile.
