What AUTHENTICATION Means
Authentication is the expert process of verifying what a piece is and what it is not. To do this, EXPERTS and certified bodies inspect from materials and period clues to construction and maker signatures.
For signed pieces, Dealers focus on SIGNATURES and maker’s marks from Houses and ateliers, as on serial or unique production numbers.
For unsigned items -a gold bracelet with no house signature, for example-, the authentication focus is on material VERIFICATION and craftsmanship checks: confirming precious metals and stones, construction and quality, cements value.
In most regions, jewels cannot be sold if they are not hallmarked. This is to indicate that an independent body has tested the metal and guarantees fineness.

A Word on Reports & CERTIFICATES
When pieces include precious stones, dealers typically rely on independent gemological REPORTS.
For diamonds, labs such as GIA (Gemological Institute of America) issue reports evaluating quality and value based on carat, colour, clarity and cut.
For coloured GEMSTONES and pearls, specialist labs -such as Gübelin and SSEF- report identity, treatments, and geographic origin.
