Created around 2017, when Pomellato celebrated its 50th anniversary by bringing Ritratto into sharp focus, the design treats the gemstone as a portrait: important, frontal and almost architectural. Ritratto means “portrait” in Italian, and this amethyst occupies the hand with the great confidence of a Renaissance miniature artwork.
The softened rectangular stone shifts between violet, plum, lilac and aubergine across its broad facets. A polished gold claw and a diagonally opposed, diamond-pavé claw hold it in deliberate asymmetry, while the broad gold shank gives the composition its smooth, sensuous volume.
